MILAN, Mich. (CAP) - One girl was slightly injured and seven others shocked into silence when a Girl Scout bridge partially collapsed last evening during a Brownie crossover ceremony at Camp Crawford. The injured six-year-old was taken to an awaiting parent and treated for minor cuts and boo-boos. "It is clearly much too early in the initial stages of this investigation to have any idea what happened," said Girl Scout CEO Kathy Cloninger. "But do know we will take every step possible to ensure something like this will not happen again." Witnesses described a "loud creaking noise" when Bethany Richards placed a hand on the railing as she approached the mid-span of the bridge. Then much to the horror of onlookers, the railing gave way and the girl stumbled forward in a desperate attempt to reach the other side without falling. "The Girl Scout who was next in line did manage to get off the bridge safely," said Marybeth Kelly, who witnessed the collapse from her spot at the baked goods table. "But little Bethany, God bless her soul, was determined to complete her crossover despite the destruction reigning down around her." Officials from Girl Scout Council have already launched an investigation into the events of that evening. According to Cloninger, their first step will be to recover pieces of the bridge and reassemble them in order to recreate the collapse. If the task proves to be too daunting, Council will enlist the help of computer models from local forensics experts. "As is customary, the bridge was built by a group of older girls trying to earn their Bronze Award," said lead investigator Mike Dunleavy. "Right now we're focusing on possible incorrect maximum weight limit calculations as well as recent inspection records. "In general, the bridge appears to have been fairly well built," noted Dunleavy. "With that said, though - Boy Scouts they're not." Council officials thus far have not closed any other bridges around the country, pending a new round of bridge inspections slated for later this year. While most bridging ceremonies have already taken place, any girls still planning to cross over to the next level of Scouts are being urged to first check their insurance coverage.
