The captain of a passenger plane flying from Brussels to New York has died mid-flight while operating the aircraft. The pilot died aboard Continental Flight 61, a Boeing 777 with 247 passengers on board.

The plane's co-pilot immediately took over the aircraft's controls, US aviation authorities said. The jet landed safely at Newark Airport just outside New York City.

After the pilot's sudden death, the remaining part of the flight was piloted by two first officers who were aboard the plane. A reserve crew on the plane assisted during the landing. The pilot died of natural causes. He was  61 and had worked for Continental for 21 years.
