INTERNET DEALING
'There are only three rules on investing: first, never lose any money, second, never lose any money, and third, never lose any money.'
Warren Buffet, Berkshire Hathaway
What is internet dealing and how does it work?
Internet dealing simply means buying and selling shares using your computer linked up to the world wide web. You can also deal using other communications devices, such as internet-enabled mobile phones and personal organisers that use so-called Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) technology.
Lots of stockbrokers now offer sharedealing via the internet and some offer demonstrations of their services on their websites. To entice new investors, brokers will often provide a lot of free financial information, such as delayed share prices and company news, as well as portfolio monitoring. This is very good for inexperienced investors to see how their fantasy portfolios perform first before gaining confidence and committing real money.
In order to set up a trading account with the broker, money has to be transferred and you need to register.. This process varies in complexity from broker to broker.
Once registered you will have access to a range of research resources online, from share prices to company reports, analysts' earnings forecasts to company-specific news. Once you know which stock you want to buy you type in its share code, or name if you don't know the code, and ask for a price. Up pops the current 'best price' for the stock in the market at that second. You then decide whether you want to transact at that price - some brokers give you 30 seconds to decide before that price lapses and you have to ask for another quote.
All deals and transfer of sensitive data are encrypted for security reasons. It makes it virtually impossible for a hacker to intercept those details in transit and crack the code. So dealing online is as safe, if not safer, that most other types of dealing.
