Lawnmower Safety

Jennifer Faddis, a writer for the News Bureau in Missouri, states,"Each year, more than 75,000 Americans are injured in lawn mowing accidents, and 10,000 of them are children."

If you are fortunate enough to own a home with a yard, you probably know how much work it takes to keep your lawn healthy and attractive. You must water it to keep it green and growing during dryer seasons, and you also have to mow it on a regular basis so it doesn't get overgrown and unkempt-looking. If it's been rainy, you'll have to mow it even more than normal.

Clear Lawn Of Rocks,Twigs, and Toys

No matter what style of lawnmower you use, you should take the time to clear your lawn of any rocks, twigs, toys, and other large or heavy things that may be on it. These items can get thrown off by your mower as you are cutting your grass, potentially causing harm to nearby people or animals or damaging your home. Depending on how your mower operates, lawn debris may also jam the motor or break other parts of the mower itself, causing you to have to get it fixed or possibly even replace the mower. The small amount of time it takes to clear your yard is certainly worth it to prevent expensive repairs to your home or lawnmower.

Use Eye Protection

Even after taking these precautions, you still may miss some small items that are buried in the grass that your mower may pick up. If possible, use a bag to collect grass clippings so these small objects end up in there instead of being launched out of your mower. For your own safety, you should use eye protection to guard against flying objects and ear protection since mowers are very loud and can cause hearing damage. Have any nearby children or pets move indoors or to another area of the yard where you are not mowing at the moment, just in case.

If all this sounds like too much work, there are many lawn service companies that can help you keep your lawn healthy, growing, and green!
