Assign Particular Task To Each Family Member

The whole family is always excited about a forthcoming camping trip, each one wanting to participate in the planning and decision making as to where to go and for how long. You assign members of your family to be in charge of particular tasks in order to get ready.

Research Camp Grounds, Rules, Secure Maps, and Directions

Make sure that you do your homework by researching the area where you want to camp out. Call the nearest Forest Service Office or Camp Ground Office with jurisdiction in the area and inquire about what on-site facilities and utilities are available. Also check the route you will take, secure maps for the nearby area and map out an alternate route if at all possible.

Pack Essential Camping Supplies

Pack all essentials with care prior to the big camping day. Make doubly sure that every item in your camp inventory list is ready and stowed away. Check each item off the list as you pack them. Camping essentials include kitchen tools and equipment, first aid kit, cooking and eating supplies, clothing, hygiene supplies and shelter equipment neatly folded and ready to go into the car. Make sure your car has a full tank of gas before you leave. It's a good idea to have your car serviced and checked a week or two before you leave for camp to ensure that it is in good running condition.

Take Care of Household Chores

The day before you leave, make sure that the house plants are watered, kitchen appliances are unplugged, doors, windows and side gates are locked, alarm systems working, light timers functioning and that pets are brought to an animal shelter or at a friend's house. Arrange to stop deliveries of newspapers and have a neighbor regularly get the mail. Make sure you take the garbage outside too.

Notify Relatives and Friends of Your Camping Plans

Inform trusted friends and/or family where you plan to go. Give them your estimated time of departure and arrival from the trip and let them know who among the family members are going along on the camping trip. Don't forget to leave them contact numbers of the area's Forest Service Office or Campground Office.
