In most areas, you are required by law to have a set of front and rear reflectors on your bicycle. Reflectors help motorists see you as you are pedaling down the road. Most bikes come with a set already on them, but if not, you can get a set at any local bike shop for a minimal charge. Some shops may even give you a very basic set for free. Make sure to clamp them securely to your bike so they don't fall off if you ride down a bumpy road.

Put Reflective Tape On Your Handlebars And On Seat Post

If you ride long distances (either for recreation or for fitness purposes) and do not want the added bulk of reflectors, or do a lot of trail riding that would possibly break your reflectors, you can get a roll of reflective tape from almost any hardware store. Some bike shops stock it as well. Put a strip or two of the tape on your handlebars and on the seat post of the bike, where the reflectors would ordinarily be clamped. You can put the reflective tape anywhere else you want on the bike to help with visibility.

Use White Front Headlights And Make Reflectors Visible

Once you have either the reflectors or reflective tape (or both) on your bike, make sure they are visible at night when you shine a light on your bike, simulating a car's headlight. For riding at night, you should also use a white front headlight (which will help you see the road in front of you, as well as make you visible to oncoming traffic) and a red rear light, as these are much easier to see from a distance than reflectors.

Add Reflective Tape To Clothing And Shoes

In many urban areas, using lights after dusk is required by law and you may be fined for not using them. Wearing clothing and shoes with reflective strips or putting reflective tape on your bag is an additional safety measure you may want to take if you will be biking at night.
