Corporal Punishment?

When most people born before the 1980's were growing up, most parents believed that a good hiding or caning was in order to keep the wayward child in check. During the last few decades, many alternative methods of discipline have become more popular.  But, there are still a good portion of modern parents who practice physical or corporal punishment and we believe a lot more than who would really admit to it.

The question for today is, is corporal punishment still a valid form of discipline and if so, how and in which instances should it be administered - and if not, what are the alternatives?
