Why choose Spanish as the language you want to learn? There are the obvious reasons such as holidays on the Costa which have become so popular over recent years. Although most Spaniards speak English if you holiday on a regular basis in the country it shows willing to learn some conversational Spanish.
Many people have made their home in Spain and so learning the language is an imperative. Also the customs and way of Spanish life.
Knowing Spanish will completely transform your travel experience too. Although it is certainly possible to travel to a Spanish speaking country without knowing any Spanish, your trip will be so much better if you speak the language. If you only speak English, you will be forced to confine yourself to popular tourist resorts where nearly everyone speaks some English.
If you want to explore the area and get to know the local people you need to know Spanish. Even simple things, such as reading signs and menus, asking directions or telling a cab driver where you want to go requires some knowledge of the language. The Spanish love it when you speak their language and will make you even more welcome than if you only spoke English. When you travel to a Spanish speaking country, knowing the language will allow you to become more involved with the people themselves.
Learning the language helps in the understanding of the Spanish people and their culture. It is a natural progression. Also the cuisine, not only of Spain but all the other Hispanic countries. Ordering food in the language is great fun and impresses the Hispanic peoples.
There are many other reasons why people want to learn Spanish as a foreign language. Spanish is spoken by almost 400 million people worldwide, which is reason enough to learn the language. All over the world Spanish is spoken in many countries particularly when you realize that about half of the population in the Western Hemisphere speaks Spanish, making it the primary language for as many people as English.
The entire continent of South America speaks primarily Spanish as does just about all of Central America, Mexico and Latin America - over 15 countries in total. In addition, within the United States, Spanish is the second most widely spoken language after English - by a very wide margin. In the U.S., more and more, opportunities are increasing for those who are fluent in both Spanish and English due to the explosion in the Spanish-speaking population.
Aside from English, Chinese and Hindustani are the most commonly spoken languages but geographically speaking, they are only widely spoken in China and India respectively. Spanish is far more widely spoken and leads other foreign languages by a wide margin for usage within the Western World. They also show that the gap is widening. The population in many Spanish-speaking nations around the world are steadily growing.
From 2005, statistically, Spanish had more native speakers than English (English had 340 million and Spanish had 350 million) Due to perceived population projections; native speakers of Spanish are increasing today and they are only expected to increase further in the coming years. If you include the number of people who are fluent in Spanish as a second language, the total number of Spanish speakers in the world is well over 400 million people.
